About Martens Cleaning

Fishing for litter

Fishing for Litter (FFL) is an initiative of KIMO Netherlands and Belgium, an association of coastal communities who cares about the safety and environment of the North Sea (coast). In Zeeland FFL has been launched in 2006. Breskens, Colijnsplaat and Flushing are the participating ports. Each year, about 400,000 kilos of waste is being collected from the sea and disposed ashore. Sea-waste is still a big problem. It enters the food chain, with all the related consequences. Each year about twenty million kilos of waste is being dumped in the North Sea and worldwide 225 million tons. Although local governments are financially supporting FFL, Martens Cleaning will also contribute by bringing the issue to the attention of the public as well as to our customers. Immediately after the waste has been collected from the sea by the fishermen and taken ashore, it is being transported to our port reception facility in Vlissingen-Oost, without further storage. This will give us a much clearer picture of what is actually being collected by the participants.
